What inspires you?
I am inspired by people’s capacity for perseverance and forgiveness. Whether it be something like Nelson Mandela’s ability to lead a country after decades of incarceration or a community’s resilience in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the capacity to work to heal is amazing
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to run or walk in the woods and look and listen for birds. I started keeping a list of birds that I have seen about two years ago, and it is now over 450 different species of birds long.
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read or seen this week?
The news about a vaccine against malaria broke earlier this week. Having served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Malawi about 25 years ago, I remember the prophylaxis that all volunteers took, being given treatment to take from our villages, and learning to do a blood smear on a slide that could be sent to the office for testing to confirm the suspected diagnosis. More importantly, I remember the devastation that the disease caused and continues to cause in countries affected by malaria. This news caused me to have nostalgia about what I perceive to be a time with less skepticism about vaccines and the huge benefit they provide to people all over the planet.
What is the one accomplishment you are most proud of?
I am the first person in my family to graduate from college.
What do you like best about living in Arizona?
Arizona has an amazing diversity of geography and flora and fauna. I especially love the Grand Canyon.
Why is ArMA important to you and your colleagues?
ArMA has a place for all the specialties in medicine, and as Obstetrician/Gynecologists, we recognize the importance of protecting the sanctity of the relationship between a doctor and a patient, free of undue legislative interference, and we have gratitude for ArMA’s strength on this position. This makes me and many of my colleagues proud ArMA members.
