Benign Gynecology & Pelvic Floor Medicine-OBG 837B 3rd year elective
This course will combine benign gynecology and pelvic floor medicine to provide the student with an understanding of health issues faced by women. Issues such as pelvic relaxation, menopause, and incontinence will be addressed. This course will broaden the student's clinical experience in gynecology, including exposure to both inpatient and outpatient settings. The student will be an integral member in the patient care team, including active participation in gynecologic surgical procedures. This course will improve the student's patient care skills, including the ability to perform proper and complete histories and physical exams, formulate differential diagnoses, and make clinical decisions. This course will improve the student's surgical skills.
Gynecologic Oncology Subinternship- OBG 840B – 4th year elective
This elective is designed to provide students with an intensive patient care experience, serving in an intern-like capacity in gynecologic oncology. Student will participate in patient care in a responsible role under appropriate supervision. Subinterns will provide care for assigned patients on the inpatient service, performing the history and physical examination, participating in daily rounds, instituting an assessment and plan, writing orders (under direct supervision of a resident and attending), writing daily progress notes, participating in surgical procedures in the operating room and participating in clinics. Subinterns will attend and participate in all didactic activities with the residents.
Note: Students should not schedule interviews during this elective.
Perinatal Medicine Subinternship-OBG 840V-4th year elective
This elective is designed to provide students with an intensive patient care experience, serving in an intern-like capacity in perinatal medicine. The student will play a vital clinical role with the resident team on obstetrics, participating in all phases of ante-, intra-, and post-partum care. In addition, exposure to specialty procedures (amniocentesis, ultrasound), clinical problems (genetic counseling) and clinical conferences will be provided.

Rural Health Professions Program II OBG 881B
Students will participate in patient care providing service in the practices of their preceptors. In addition, students will interact with social service and other healthcare agencies to gain a more complete knowledge of services available. Students will work with their assigned physician preceptors in their practices located in rural Arizona. Students will compare/contrast experiences with rural setting with that of an academic health center.
Obstetrics & Gynecology (Away Rotation)- OBG 891
Provides the student with an opportunity to participate in an Obstetrics and Gynecology program at an approved hospital in the United States.
Obstetrics and Gynecology Independent Study- OBG 899
The goal of this elective is to allow the student to work with a specific faculty member in pursuit of a particular field of study in obstetrics & gynecology. The focus of the elective is determined by the student in conjunction with the supervising faculty advisor, and can include such educational activities as directed readings, discussions and a paper based on the agreed upon topic.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology accepts visiting students from LCME or COCA medical schools. Applications are made through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) website. The College of Medicine-Tucson Electives Catalog opens for applications in April. Applications are processed and offers extended no more than eight weeks prior to the start date for each elective.
